Reducing Emissions with Flare Stack Monitoring

A flaring system is compulsory safety equipment in the refinery but leads to emissions. Flaring is an unavoidable process in the refining activity, not only for safety reasons during upset processes (start-up, shut down) but also when managing the disposal of waste gases in hydrocarbon routine operations.

Refinery managers need to accurately monitor the production, removal, venting, and burning of CO2, methane, and other gases. Knowledge of both methane flow and temperature at the flare stack can define when methane is released into the environment instead of combusted. To accurately determine methane production levels and flow, our wireless pressure transmitter can detect both pressure and vacuum present within the methane production system.

The OleumTech WIO wireless RTD transmitter takes temperature measurement readings at the point of heat in an active flame, verifying that methane is burning. Logically, if the meter is indicating a methane flow and the temperature at the flare stack is high, then the methane is burning correctly. If the meter indicates methane flow and the temperature is low, methane is releasing into the environment.
